What To Believe?

A mix of things have contributed to the topic of this week’s inspiration.  Firstly it is Easter time and so I have been thinking about the religious significance of that holiday, whilst reading a book by Sylvia Browne called ‘The Mystical Life of Jesus.’   A few people have also asked me lately how I deal with people who do not believe in what I do.  All of these things combined got me thinking about how we decide what to believe in and where we place our faith.

There will always be extremists and skeptics.  This I have come to accept over the years.  We look at the extreme religious acts of the Muslim movements as well as some of the Christian movements and we are still witnessing acts of bloodshed over religion today.  Who’s God is right and who’s is wrong?!  I have no problem with those who want to practice religion but I do question blind faith, especially the kind of faith that would cause you to harm yourself or another person.  Which begs the question how do we know what to believe?

When people ask me how I can prove the things I know or have seen I tell them I can not, it is mostly something you have to experience to understand.  I have read many articles by skeptics who would like to prove that psychics and mediums are charlatans and making it all up and maybe there are some that are, but having grown up experiencing this phenomena I can find it very hard to deal with at times.  However the skeptics have a right to question things.  Just as others have a right to believe them. But I have never gone into anything with blind faith or because someone else told me to believe it.  Whatever you believe it is always a good idea to be conservative and get some evidence for yourself to support the beliefs.

It is now being shown how inconsistent the bible is and how it was manipulated to serve a certain purpose at the time.  This does not mean that there are not certain aspects of the book that hold great truths and important messages.  It does however mean that it is best not to just hold a single book sacred just because someone has convinced you that it is holy.  Again I have nothing against the bible and I am using it as an example because it is fairly well known!  This is the same for any book or text.  It is also the same for any teacher or institution.  It is also interesting to note (whether you believe in him or not) that Jesus Christ actually spent 15 years of his life studying with many religions!

Beliefs are part of how we see and experience ourselves and the world around us, therefore what we believe is what we will perceive.   Someone who believes in a judgmental God will have a very different experience to someone who believes in an unconditionally loving God and also different to what an atheist would have.   What we choose to believe is very important so it can be very useful to get lots of information and a variety of experiences before deciding where you sit on things.  And be flexible because new experiences can change old beliefs and we are always growing and learning.

Choose to believe what feels right for you.  Be willing to acknowledge the beliefs of others and be open to new ideas and possibilities as they are revealed to you.  Choose beliefs that nurture and nourish your soul and make you feel joyous and good about yourself.  And in the words of Christ “seek and you shall find.”

With lots of love and light to you all
