A Change Of Season...

It feels like only yesterday I was writing last years’ autumn inspiration but here we are again!  Autumn is upon us and as with any new season we will need to adjust to the changes that accompany it.

When we experience a change in season it is always good to acknowledge it.  Our bodies are of the earth so we are impacted whenever an earth change occurs and the more we can recognise and flow with these changes the easier and more peaceful our lives will be.

In autumn the temperature begins to drop, the days become shorter again, the trees lose their leaves and our bodies start to prepare for the cooler months ahead.  What does this mean for you?  Well for many changes in the weather will cause a drop in immunity and an adjustment period for the body.  However there is no need to create ‘sickness’ in your life and it is not really ‘normal’ to get sick just because the weather is getting colder.   In the ancient Indian medicine Ayurveda they say that autumn is a very Vata period.  Vata represents the elements of air and space which has the characteristics of dry, rough, thin, light weight and fast moving.  This will cause people to become a bit anxious, restless, can cause energy fluctuations and poor immunity.  So because autumn tends to be windy and drier this can aggravate these characteristics in people.  A diet of nourishing foods such as root vegetables, soups, ginger tea with a little honey, cooked fruits, good quality fats (such as nuts, seeds, rice bran oil, avocado), porridge, rice and wholesome breads are all useful in reducing the effects of Vata.   Also a nourishing and good quality diet mixed with adequate sleep and exercise (like walking or yoga) can prevent the autumn blues or the need to have any dips in immunity.

Remember our bodies think they are preparing for hibernation so you may feel like eating a whole lot of food you do not need and you will also feel as though you want to slow down.  So if you need a lazy weekend my recommendation is to take one!  Sometimes if we ignore our bodies’ requests for rest they eventually find a way to make us rest.

The autumn is also symbolic because the leaves start to fall and things prepare for a new start.  We can apply this in our lives and we can take the time to shed anything that no longer serves us such as addictions, negative relationships or situations and material items (it is a good time to clean out your closets!).

All in all take some time to remember what you love about autumn and winter.  Like new coats, hot chocolate, rainy days in doors or the ski season.  It can be easy to start grieving for the summer but if we resist the change of season it can cause us to feel depressed and lower our energy.  So embrace the changes in weather and all that means for you and affirm that this is going to be a mild and pleasant winter, the best one of your life so far!
