Facing Our Issues...
As always when planning what I will write each week I observe patterns of what is going on around me. This week it seemed quite obvious what I should write about as everywhere I turn right now everyone has an issue or two!
On Sunday evening I found out another one of my friends got engaged. There are four of us who are pretty close and three out of four of us are now engaged, I am not one of them. Although I am so happy for all of my friends I found myself doing self-pity and sobbing. While I was sobbing my logical mind kept telling me I knew better than to be like this, that it does not mean that I am not loveable and being in a relationship is not everything. However none of my logic seemed to stop the tears from flowing. Then I took a moment and realized that I should just let it flow, there was a reason that all this emotion was coming to the surface and whatever had triggered it was leading me to a better understanding about myself.
Isn’t it funny how we always try to avoid our ‘issues.’ The word issue may cause you some discomfort because none of us want to admit to having any issues but the reality is we all do. Whether they are big or small we have them! Issues are basically negative beliefs we have about ourselves and the world, often these beliefs were created when we experienced an event and made it mean something it really didn’t. We could see a person screw their face up while looking in our direction and take it personally but they might just have wind!
When you acknowledge an issue it gives you the chance to work through it and let it go. If you hide it under the rug it just gets bigger and creates havoc in your life. We will do all kinds of things to avoid the underlying issues that are holding us back – we might indulge in eating, drinking or smoking, we might watch too much TV, play too much sport, never allow ourselves to have a moment alone or work too much. We blame things outside of us for why our life isn’t working as well as it could and if someone triggers our issue we also blame them.
Every issue you have in your life whether it is about your body image, your relationships, your lack of job satisfaction, your inability to save money or make money, your health problems or your addictive behaviours has a core belief that needs to be dealt with in order to create lasting change. If you change the behaviour it will never stick. Why do you think we go on diet after diet but we never keep the weight off! We must address the core issue in order to make positive changes and allow the life we deserve to be created.
The only way to get to these core issues is to acknowledge they are there in the first place and then we have the option to start addressing them. Often when we look at ourselves honestly we realize that the beliefs we have clung to for so long do not serve us and have no real evidence. If we want our lives to change we are the only ones that can influence that change. Louise Hay suggests in her best selling book ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ that the things that we are most uncomfortable about changing are the things that need changing the most!
Try this exercise Louise Hay suggests – touch your hand to your throat (the throat chakra is an essential part of the change process) and repeat over and over again out loud “I am willing to change, I am willing to change.” Doing this while looking in the mirror is also useful. This will begin you on the path to releasing your negative beliefs and if you find you need some outside help you can talk to someone professional about your concerns.
Issues are not excuses for your behaviour nor are they something to be ashamed of. Next time something or someone triggers one in you, take a good look at it and realize that you can release it if you choose to. Be willing to change anything that is not working in your life, you do not have to carry those suitcases around anymore!
Have an amazing week everyone. May all your days be filled with blessings.
Lots of love and light
